Located off the Yellowhead Highway in northwest Edmonton, the Claystone West Edmonton Waste Transfer Station is a modern, purpose-built facility designed to optimize waste management operations throughout the Edmonton metropolitan area. This project serves industrial, commercial, institutional, and residential clients, providing a sustainable and efficient waste disposal solution.
Overview
Atkinson Construction was selected as the General Contractor for the project, managing all phases of the build—from initial site preparation to the final commissioning of the facility. The centerpiece of the project is a 10,780-square-foot steel-structured building, designed to withstand the demanding operational requirements of a modern waste transfer station.
Scope

The facility features a 10,780 sq. ft. pre-engineered steel structure, offering superior durability, flexibility, and cost-efficiency. Atkinson utilized high-performance steel components to create a wide-span, column-free interior, optimizing the space for heavy-duty waste handling equipment and maximizing operational efficiency.
Site Development
Comprehensive site preparation was carried out, including grading, installation of underground utilities, and paving, to support the structural integrity and accommodate the movement of large transport vehicles.
Facility Features
The transfer station is equipped with advanced waste sorting and processing systems, capable of handling a wide range of materials such as construction debris, recyclables, and general waste. The design allows for future integration of source-separated organics processing to meet evolving sustainability goals.
Additional infrastructure
Additional infrastructure—including perimeter fencing, secure access gates, site lighting, and landscaping—was installed to enhance operational safety and site security.
