Project Details
Location: Grande Prairie, Alberta
Project Type: Remediation, Public Spaces
Located in the heart of Grande Prairie, Alberta, the Montrose Cultural Centre is a cornerstone community facility that houses the public library, art gallery, and multiple civic spaces. Phase 1 of the building’s remediation program was designed to modernize aging infrastructure and improve environmental control systems while maintaining continuous facility operations.
Overview
Atkinson Construction was awarded the contract as the General Contractor, managing the full delivery of structural, architectural, mechanical, electrical, and building management system upgrades across a 4,500 square foot project scope. This work required meticulous planning and coordination with facility stakeholders to ensure phased execution with minimal disruption to day-to-day operations.

Scope
Concrete Demolition and Reconstruction
Selective demolition and re-pouring of concrete sections were completed to support new infrastructure and resolve foundational issues without compromising adjacent structures.
Architectural and Structural Modifications
Wall blockwork and structural enhancements were implemented to support new mechanical systems and interior reconfigurations.
Mechanical and HVAC Reconfiguration
The mechanical scope involved reconfiguration of existing ductwork and installation of new air handling infrastructure, improving indoor air quality, occupant comfort, and long-term efficiency.
Electrical Upgrades and Access Control
Electrical systems were upgraded to support new environmental control technologies and ensure code compliance. Access control systems were modernized to enhance security and occupant safety.
Building Management System (BMS) Integration
A centralized BMS was integrated to allow real-time monitoring and management of HVAC, lighting, and environmental systems, contributing to operational efficiency and energy conservation.
Phased Construction Coordination
Due to the facility's continuous use during construction, Atkinson led detailed stakeholder engagement and scheduling, delivering work in coordinated phases to minimize service interruptions for library patrons, gallery visitors, and staff.
Atkinson’s Commitment
Through the successful completion of Phase 1, Atkinson Construction delivered critical infrastructure improvements while preserving the functionality and public accessibility of the Montrose Cultural Centre. The project reflects Atkinson’s expertise in executing complex remediation work within operational public facilities, balancing construction performance with community needs.
