Located on Lakeview Avenue in Watson Lake, Yukon, the Housing First Complex is a purpose-built supportive housing facility designed to provide permanent, low-barrier housing for individuals experiencing or at risk of homelessness. This initiative, led by the Government of Yukon in partnership with the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, Liard First Nation, and the Town of Watson Lake, addresses a critical need for safe, stable housing in the community.
Overview
Atkinson Construction was selected as the General Contractor for the project, overseeing all phases of construction to deliver a high-quality, durable facility. The single-story complex spans approximately 11,500 square feet and features 10 residential units, including eight studio apartments and two one-bedroom apartments, along with shared communal spaces and on-site support services.

Scope
Structural Construction
Atkinson constructed the 11,500 sq. ft. wood-framed facility, utilizing durable materials designed to withstand Watson Lake’s northern climate. The structure was built for energy efficiency and long-term sustainability, incorporating high-performance insulation and weather-resistant exterior finishes
Site Development and Civil Work
The project began with full site preparation, including clearing, grading, and utility installations. Drainage systems and paved pathways were implemented to ensure site accessibility and functionality. Landscaping and green spaces were incorporated to enhance the outdoor environment.
Building Envelope and Exterior
The building’s exterior features energy-efficient cladding, triple-pane windows, and a sloped roof system engineered to handle heavy snow loads. The façade was designed to blend with the surrounding environment while offering long-term durability and minimal maintenance
Through the successful delivery of the Housing First Complex in Watson Lake, Atkinson Construction has demonstrated its dedication to building impactful, community-focused infrastructure. This facility will provide safe, supportive housing that meets the evolving needs of Watson Lake residents, while contributing to broader efforts to combat homelessness in the Yukon.
